Margam Park, Port Talbot, South Wales

Originated by Lou Lusardi in 2004, the Dragon Ride quickly became Britain’s  No.1 cyclosportive event and was voted UK’s favourite for three consecutive years by readers of Cycling Weekly. Prior to 2004 no real continental style sportive rides existed in the UK. On a visit to relatives in Italy Lou took part in an Italian Gran Fondo and realised it’s potential back home in Britain, so the Dragon Ride was born. The popularity of the event was measured in the fact that on most years all available entries sold out within hours of them becoming available. In 2011 the ownership rights to the Dragon Ride were sold to Human Race Ltd, with Breakaway Events continuing to provide route design and consultation services for the event under the direction of Lou.DRW 09.4

The 2015 event is based at Margam Park near Port Talbot South Wales and features 4 different routes taking in the classic South Wales mountain climbs used in the past on the Milk Race and Tour of Britain. The shortest route is a loop around the coast and includes the women only Cycletta ride. Next two distances the Medio and Gran Fondo are up into the mountains and the Brecon Beacons. The longest day ride  peaks at 300km and takes in the “Devils Staircase” climb in Mid Wales. New for 2015 are an additional two days entitled the Dragon Tour, which takes riders out onto the Gower peninsular and The Bettws Mountain road north of Swansea.
